London Pub Removes Duke of York Portraits
Several large display posters showing images of Prince Andrew were eliminated from the Duke of York pub which operates in Fitzrovia’s central London district. American artist Igor Babailov created this artwork showing the Duke of York in Royal Navy uniform and the work first debuted during 2014 when public opinion about him as a royal figure was favorable.
The pub owners Landlady Debi Sickelmore and her partner Alan Monks maintained the display of art pieces showing Prince Andrew for many years despite public criticism regarding his declining status. Management chose to maintain both images on display after the Queen removed his royal patronages along with his military titles in 2022. The establishment underwent an ownership transition to Hertford-based brewery McMullen and Sons when the new management took over. The venue’s new management team decided to eliminate every image related to Prince Andrew to introduce a new beginning to the establishment.
