The Penguin miniseries from HBO, ranking among the best gangster shows of the recent era, received widespread acclaim. The show gained wide acclaim from viewers and professionals because Colin Farrell’s portrayal of DC’s notorious villain led him to win three major awards, including Golden Globe and SAG Awards, along with Critics Choice.
The resounding achievement of Season 1 has led viewers to intensely pursue any signs regarding the possibility of a new season. HBO Max executive producer Sarah Aubrey recently delivered recent comments indicating The Penguin series might not receive future seasons.
A Second Season? HBO Keeps the Door Open
The excitement about the series prompted Aubrey to participate in an interview yet she refused to commit to additional seasons. The show producer stated Season 2 could be possible based on particular requirements being met.
“Look, [we’re] using the model that Casey and Frannie have deployed many times over many successful limited series: if there is more story to tell, and there may be in that world,” she said.
Her comments suggest that while a second season is not off the table, the creators are prioritizing quality over speed.
No Rush to Follow Up Excellence
Aubrey made it clear that HBO does not want to rush into another season without ensuring it meets the high standard set by the first.
“We don’t want to follow up something excellent with something less excellent,” she explained.
She also admitted that the production of The Penguin was a long and meticulous process, which is why the team is in no hurry to greenlight a second season just yet.
“It took a very long time to get this show made, and we had many different iterations, so I’m just like, ‘Can I please just enjoy this for a second?!’” Aubrey joked.
A Waiting Game for Fans
During his statement, Aubrey used optimistic language to ensure fans that production might continue despite doubts by saying “we never shut the door.” HBO has yet to make a decision about further Penguin series projects while audience members must wait for their announcement. If The Penguin show returns after the creative team dedicates time to developing a powerful narrative then viewers will receive it as an exciting experience.
