Hollywood Says Goodbye to Val Kilmer: A Legend Remembered

Actor Val Kilmer departed the world at 65 years of age after delivering memorable performances in Top Gun (1986) and Batman Forever (1995). Daughter Mercedes Kilmer expressed to The New York Times that pneumonia took her father Val Kilmer’s, life on the first day of April 2020.
In 2014, doctors diagnosed throat cancer in Kilmer. His recovery from cancer proved brief, but following this incident, his health issues became the core element of his life in the more recent years.
A Bittersweet Final Farewell
Audiences witnessed Val Kilmer in his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky during Top Gun: Maverick (2022). The short meeting of Kilmer with Cruise in the movie emerged as a memorable and emotionally powerful moment throughout the whole film.
“I just want to say that was pretty emotional,” Cruise told Jimmy Kimmel in an interview. “I’ve known Val for decades, and for him to come back and play that character… he’s such a powerful actor that he instantly became that character again.”
A Silent Battle: His Fight Against Cancer
The public shared unsubstantiated information about Val Kilmer’s deteriorating condition for numerous years. The actor revealed his throat cancer fight to The Hollywood Reporter journalists in December 2017. The battle with two diseases severely affected Kilmer and his relatives. During his medical treatments, Val Kilmer received a tracheotomy that modified his voice but caused breathing difficulties.
His health condition became apparent in January 2015 when medical personnel took him to a hospital for treatment of a tumor. Kilmer publicly denied the presence of a tumor after doctors at UCLA treated his complication in the intensive care unit.
“I have not had a tumor or any tumor operation,” he wrote in a post. “I am praying for a speedy return to the boards, as they say. God bless you all and please don’t worry.”
His fans repeatedly received confirmation of his well-being, yet his health condition remained a point of speculation among the public. A tracheostomy tube became visible when he appeared in public late in 2015, thus revealing the evidence of surgical treatment even after he removed the tube.
