
Recently, with the start of the 119th Congress, senator from South Carolina, Tim Scott, became the first Black US senator to serve for this long. Besides this milestone, Tim Scott was made the first Black chairman of a Senate standing committee, the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee. His tenure as the chairman of the committee in this capacity comes after serving as the top-ranking Republican during the chamber’s previous Democratic majority.

During the 119th Congress, there were also two new Black Democratic senators, named Angela Alsobrooks, representing Maryland, and Lisa Blunt Rochester, representing Delaware; the total number of Black senators is five.
Elected to the Senate in 2013, his specialties in economic growth, education, and reforming the justice system represent key areas of his focus. Another chapter in his endeavors to influence the policy that will be helpful for every citizen of the United States starts with his new position as the committee chair.
