The Penguin series from HBO presents Colin Farrell in a Gotham underworld drama. However, much to the fans’ surprise, Robert Pattinson’s Batman will not be making an appearance, not even in a cameo. The creative decision to exclude Batman from a storyline that belongs to The Batman universe causes viewers to wonder about the reasoning behind this decision.
The Reason Behind Batman’s Absence
Lauren Lefrance gave explanations to settle the widespread curiosity about this choice through an interview. The Batman director Matt Reeves developed a distinct plan for Gotham’s cinematic portrayal as shared by Lefranc. During his interview, Reeves stressed that Gotham City is enormous as Batman makes his efforts to maintain a constant presence throughout the city despite his efforts he remains unable to be everywhere. The Penguin does not directly show Batman’s absence because Batman chooses his battles strategically based on criminal underworld activities.
The showrunner verified that even though viewers do not see Batman in The Penguin the vigilante continues monitoring Gotham City from a discreet distance. Gotham operates on various levels where Oswald Cobblepot builds his criminal empire and Batman observably supervises emerging threats throughout the city even though he stays physically distant.
Will Batman and Penguin Clash Again?
The Penguin TV series will feature the entire portrayal of Colin Farrell’s Penguin character but does not indicate a complete exclusion of Batman from their future meetings. The series events according to Lefranc create consequences that extend to the upcoming Batman film. Future Batman films featuring Robert Pattinson will show direct influences from The Penguin which will create conditions for Batman’s next showdown against Penguin.
A Dark Future for Gotham
Viewers will experience Gotham’s underworld structures and power conflicts through the primary focus on Farell’s Penguin in the HBO crime drama. Matt Reeves directs his focus toward The Batman Part II while working actively on its development aiming for a 2027 theater release. The changing crime scale of Gotham remains unpredictable as Batman operates from the darkness of the city. Never doubt that the Bat and the Bird must eventually come together although Penguin exists as his individual story.
