The 31st Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards surprised everyone on Sunday by awarding Conclave the top title instead of securing it for Anora throughout the awards season. The SAG Award win created uncertainty in the Oscar competition because both Oppenheimer and Everything Everywhere All at Once had previously won SAG Awards and eventually received Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
Conclave stands apart from other major contenders because it received only one additional best-picture award victory at the BAFTAs while future Oscar predictions become uncertain for March 2.
Timothée Chalamet Ends Adrien Brody’s Streak
When Timothée Chalamet received his SAG Award for A Complete Unknown he ended the string of victories held by Adrien Brody for The Brutalist. When accepting the award Chalamet wasted no time revealing his thoughts.
“I’m really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats.”
The SAG trophy generally leads to corresponding Oscar honors except when Lily Gladstone received the SAG Best Actress for Killers of the Flower Moon only to lose at the Oscars to Emma Stone for Poor Things.
The win by Demi Moore continues to strengthen her position in the Best Actress category.
Demi Moore obtained the best-actress accolade for her role in The Substance at the SAG Awards although Anora’s Mikey Madison competed in the same category against her. Moore delivered another impactful speech at the Golden Globes which she dedicated to during her victory.
“that little girl who didn’t believe in herself.” She concluded with a heartfelt: “The words are kind of beyond me. So I’m just going to have to say thank you.“
Supporting Categories Stay Predictable
The lead-actor categories experienced annual upsets yet the supporting categories stuck to their traditional choices.
- Their leading roles in A Real Pain and Emilia Pérez strengthened their position as favored candidates for the Oscars.
- Typical to his nature Culkin received his award while making a joke about his win by stating:
“It’s hard to be sincere here. Or in general.”

Veteran actress Jane Fonda accepted her Lifetime Achievement Award with a powerful political message, warning Hollywood,
“This is it, and it’s not a rehearsal.”
