Adored MTV host and culture icon of the late 90s and early 2000s, Ananda Lewis, has died at the age of 52 after a personal and long struggle with breast cancer. On June 11, her heartbroken sister, Lakshmi Lew, took to Facebook to make the devastating announcement.
A GeneratiSpeaks
During her MTV years, Ananda Lewis was a household name, hosting such fan-favorite shows as Hot Zone and Total Request Live. Through her brash persona, compassion, and undeniable genuineness, she rapidly gained the notoriety of being the, It Girl, of the hip-hop generation, a moniker formerly reinforced by The New York Times.
In 2001, she left MTV to executive produce and host her own nationally syndicated daytime talk show, The Ananda Lewis Show, which focused on real issues, social injustice, to personal empowerment. It only lasted a short time, but it received critical acclaim and helped to establish her impact outside the music television industry.
A personal Health Battle is revealed.
In 2020, Ananda Lewis first announced her breast cancer diagnosis on Instagram, saying that she was diagnosed with stage III invasive carcinoma. She announced that she had put off regular mammograms for years because she was afraid of radiation, only to find out about the cancer in 2019 when she finally visited a specialist. She remembered the diagnosis in an open 2024 interview with Essence:
“The doctor recognized me the next day and informed me it was invasive carcinoma.”
It turned out to be HER2-negative, ER/PR positive stage 3 breast cancer. Lewis also did not choose a double mastectomy, although she was diagnosed with cancer, and instead chose alternative ways of treatment. Unfortunately, her health deteriorated, and at the end of 2023, she developed stage IV cancer.
