Rebecca Kutler who assumed leadership of MSNBC decided to end the daily programming of Joy Reid’s “The ReidOut” as part of network-wide changes in programming. Sources indicate that this week marks the anticipated last broadcast of the 7 p.m. show according to internal information.
During the past five years, MSNBC kept “The ReidOut” prominently positioned in its primetime broadcasting. It will launch a new show bringing Symone Sanders Townsend as former Democratic strategist Michael Steele as former RNC chairman and Alicia Menendez following her position as a journalist.
A Major Revamp Underway
As the first programming overhaul since Rebecca Kutler took the MSNBC presidency, she recently assumed the head role at the network. The network president Rebecca Kutler pursues rating improvement as it holds superior numbers compared to CNN while trailing behind Fox News ratings by implementing fresh network development plans.
Additional shake-ups are expected. Between January and the first 100 days under the Trump administration, Rachel Maddow took back her five-day-per-week hosting duties for the 9 p.m. show after she previously appeared only on Mondays. When MSNBC made this announcement the network specified that Alex Wagner would return to air her 9 p.m. show in late April.
However, this plan has changed. The 9 p.m. time slot anchor position at MSNBC will receive its appointee who MSNBC considers Jen Psaki the most suitable of all prospects. Psaki remains one of the strong candidates for the position although the network has yet to finalize its selection. She currently appears on Sundays at noon and Mondays at 8 p.m.
MSNBC’s Corporate Shift
The transition to a new corporate structure at MSNBC becomes parallel to their programming modifications. The network which operated under NBCUniversal News Group will now function as an individual unit within the Comcast organization together with CNBC and USA Network. Mark Lazarus served as the executive in charge of the transition but Kutler did not play any direct role in choosing the programming content.
New Faces on the Horizon
There are talks at MSNBC to recruit additional on-screen talent because organization leaders believe it will boost their broadcast talent pool. The network is currently exploring potential opportunities to add Eugene Daniels along with Melissa Murray as co-hosts. Both media observers and insiders actively discuss what it should program in the future since additional changes are on the horizon.
