Luke Combs Opens Up About “Wicked” Mental Health Struggle

Country music artist Luke Combs speaks openly about his psychological problems because he wants to assist people handling similar mental health conditions. The Australian branch of 60 Minutes interviewed the singer in February, where he disclosed his experience with Pure O since he turned 12. He mentioned that tour life caused one of his most difficult flare-ups since he was 12 years old.
The Struggles of Pure O
Patients with Pure OCD experience intrusive thoughts since their form of the disorder manifests without observable compulsions. Describing the condition, Luke Combs explained,
“It’s thoughts, essentially, that you don’t want to have… and then they cause you stress, and then you’re stressed out, and then the stress causes you to have more of the thoughts, and then you don’t understand why you’re having them, and you’re trying to get rid of them, but trying to get rid of them makes you have more of them.”
He emphasized how difficult it is to battle an illness with no outward symptoms, calling it “particularly wicked.”
Learning to Cope
Despite the hardships, Luke Combs remains hopeful. He considers himself “lucky” to have gained extensive knowledge about the disorder after battling it for so long.
“I understand how to get out of it now,” he shared.
When asked how he copes with the overwhelming thoughts, Combs revealed an important realization:
“The way to get out of it is, like, it doesn’t matter what the thoughts even are. You giving any credence to what the thoughts are is, like, irrelevant and only fuels you having more of them.”
The condition Pure O causes individuals diagnosed with it to have distressing, persistent, intrusive thoughts, thus generating mental rituals to manage symptoms, according to Healthline.
Raising Awareness and Offering Hope
The act of discussing his mental health issues goes beyond storytelling because Luke Combs wants to help others find assistance and see they have company in their struggle. Speaking about mental health challenges helps minimize the societal stigma that exists due to social isolation.
During his tour, Luke Combs demonstrated his commitment to healthcare management and campaigns for mental health education, which demonstrates how even severe instances of darkness transform when people receive hope and comprehension.
