Dubai Developer Takes Aim at 007 Rights
Dubai property developer Josef Kleindienst launched legal proceedings to dispute the ownership rights of the James Bond name alongside its recognizable designation 007. Kleindienst filed legal action in the UK and EU against Danjaq and Eon which holds the Bond copyright rights because these rights holders allegedly neglected to utilize the Bond title for electronic publishing vehicle model rights and digital media rights for more than five years. The Guardians reports that the legal challenge pits against not just franchise signature phrases but also their alternate versions including James Bond 007 and Bond, James Bond.
UK and EU Laws Could Put Bond’s Legacy at Risk
According to trademark laws in both UK and EU jurisdictions, a name can be challenged and potentially revoked if commercial use of that name stops for a specific defined period. Kleindienst exploits the trademark clause in his legal challenge to eliminate important Bond franchise brands from existence.
