Folk-rock singer Jesse Colin Young known for his position as leader of The Youngbloods and guitarist of their famous song “Get Together” died at 83 years old.
A Peaceful Farewell
Connie Young the widow of Jesse and his business manager disclosed that he died Sunday, March 16 at their Aiken South Carolina residence. His death concludes his legendary musical journey that stretched across many years although medical staff has not announced his cause of passing.
Popular fame came first for Jesse Colin Young when he served as leader of The Youngbloods in 1967 until their release of “Get Together” achieved significant commercial success. Songwriters never anticipated success when they first released it but reissuing the track in 1969 made it an anti-war song that reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song established itself as an emblematic musical expression that celebrated unity during a significant period of time.
A Flourishing Solo Career
Jesse Colin Young started performing solo after The Youngbloods ended in 1972 while he combined folk elements with jazz and country music in his songs. With Song for Juli (1973) Young released his most celebrated album which combined music with his deep affection for both music and nature.
During the 1970s Jesse Colin Young performed extensively throughout the decade and he started by opening for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young during their historic 1974 stadium concerts. Throughout multiple decades of his musical career Young maintained an authentic commitment to the folk-rock musical style.
Battling Health Challenges and a Triumphant Return
Jesse Colin Young received a diagnosis of chronic Lyme disease in 2009 which led to reduced performing abilities. The disease pushed him to withdraw from music while he battled his illness for several years. His health returned to full power in 2016 when his son performed at Berklee College of Music.
With his last studio album Highway Troubadour (2021), Jesse Colin Young returned to his initial music to create a new straightforward version of his classic tracks. Music remained a constant source of love for Young throughout every period of his life including his later years.

Jesse Colin Young maintained his support for musical longevity despite his reduced output during his later years of life. Young maintained during his 2019 interview that the strength of his popular song “Get Together” had not faded.
