A recent leak from a source within Apple’s Chinese supply chain is adding fuel to growing speculation that Apple is preparing a significant memory upgrade for its upcoming iPhone 17 lineup. According to the leak, the next-generation iPhones—specifically the iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max—could all feature a hefty 12GB of RAM.
This aligns with predictions made by well-known industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggested that even the base-model iPhone 17 might receive the same RAM bump—depending on whether Apple can overcome supply chain limitations.
Apple Playing It Safe—For Now
Kuo stated that Apple will finalize its decision on the RAM configuration for the standard iPhone 17 model by May. While a 12GB RAM upgrade for all models is on the table, the company is reportedly being cautious due to potential supply issues. Should Apple decide to play it safe, the base model may retain the current 8GB setup seen in the iPhone 16 series.
Despite this uncertainty, Kuo remains confident that Apple will fully adopt 12GB of RAM across the entire iPhone 18 lineup in 2026.
What a RAM Bump Really Means
If Apple does move forward with 12GB of RAM in the iPhone 17 family, it would mark a 50% increase in memory from the current iPhone 16 models. That boost would be especially impactful given Apple’s push into artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities.
More RAM allows larger AI models to run locally on the device rather than relying heavily on cloud computing. This could result in faster processing, more responsive performance, and enhanced multitasking, especially with AI features running in the background.
The shift toward increased local processing is a strategic one for Apple, as it continues building out on-device AI experiences.
