Beloved actor Alan Cumming has confirmed that he will reprise his fan-favorite role as Sandy Frink in the highly anticipated sequel to the cult classic Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.
Alan Cumming originally played the nerd-turned-millionaire in the 1997 comedy, which starred Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino as quirky best friends Michele Weinberger and Romy White. The duo famously invented glamorous careers to impress their former classmates during their 10-year high school reunion.
Sequel Set for 2027, With Familiar Faces Returning
In a new interview with PEOPLE, the X2 and The Good Wife actor opened up about the sequel’s development.
“It’s very exciting,” Cumming said. “It’s been really fun actually talking to Robin [Schiff], the writer, and Lisa [Kudrow] as well about it.”
While keeping plot details tightly under wraps, the 60-year-old actor did confirm the film is aiming for a 2027 release.
“I can’t really say much without giving too much away,” he teased. “Obviously everyone’s still in each other’s lives. But it may be in a different way… It’s nice to think of those characters still being old friends.”
The Original Charm Remains, With a Twist
The sequel reunites much of the original team, including director David Mirkin. Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino return in their iconic roles, and the original cast—featuring Julia Campbell, Janeane Garofalo, Elaine Hendrix, and Justin Theroux—is also expected to make appearances.
The original film was celebrated for its blend of quirky humor, ’90s nostalgia, and heartfelt friendship, earning a cult following over the years. Fans are hopeful that the sequel will capture the same magic—though hints from Alan Cumming suggest that time has brought new dynamics to the characters’ relationships.
Alan’s Busy Slate Includes Marvel Return
While preparing for his return as Sandy Frink, Alan Cumming is also stepping back into another iconic role: Nightcrawler. The Scottish star is set to reprise his role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, adding superhero action to his already busy calendar.
With Romy and Michele nostalgia at an all-time high, and the promise of a reunion nearly three decades in the making, fans are already buzzing with excitement for what could be a surprising—and emotional—trip down memory lane.
